'Oz in Pictures'
ua-cam.com/channels/QOBMWgTY8cNcThvGhdEnIw.html
This channel is a collaborative one between myself (DM) and SJ and will showcase our journey in film and pictures. It will still have similar videos to our earlier content (infact I've rebadged a number of the more picturesque older videos and uploaded them as they are good fits for the new channel too) but we will have more videos of our camping, overlanding and cycling adventures too. We're also researching another way of Australia which has been a lifelong dream so stay tuned for that because when it happens it will be a huge part of our content.
In addition to UA-cam we upload our videos to Odysee:

Retro Games Re-lived - Grand Prix Circuit
Переглядів 6145 років тому
This video is a review and demonstration of Grand Prix Circuit which was a DOS game made by Accolade that was released in most countries in 1988. It was loosely based on the 1988 Formula One series. In it you could choose to drive one of 3 different cars to race on 8 of the 16 tracks that featured in that years championship. Like many people who owned a PC in the late 80's and early 90's I had ...
Lake Bonney Marathon Swim
Переглядів 4315 років тому
Lake Bonney is a large lake located next to the town of Barmera in South Australia. It measures 6.5 km down the length at it's longest stretch and is the venue for our latest marathon swim challenge. On this occasion I swam 2 laps of the lake along that course making the swim 13 km. I'd been wanting to do this swim for years. As a much younger person I competed here in open water swimming compe...
Basin Lake Hike - Fraser Island
Переглядів 5565 років тому
Basin Lake is a small perched freshwater lake on Fraser Island in Queensland, Australia. It can be reached via a few different hiking tracks but the one that is used the most goes from Central Station via Wanggoolba Creek and is about a 5.5 km return trip. With the close proximity of the thick vegitation the lake is reasonably protected from the wind making it an attractive secluded location th...
Lake McKenzie Marathon Swim - Fraser Island

Lake McKenzie is a stunning freshwater lake on Fraser Island in Queensland and the location of the second of my 'marathon swim challenges'. It covers an area of 150 hectares and with it's clear waters and white silica sands it's probably the most well known and visited location on the island. The waters are slightly acidic in nature and this actually is one of the reasons it stays so clear beca...
Lake Wabby Hike - Fraser Island

Lake Wabby is a well known lake on Fraser Island. It's relatively small and is getting gradually consumed by the Hammerstone Sand Blow. At 12 meters it is the deepest lake on the island and unlike most of the others is full of aquatic life, particularly large catfish. There are 2 hiking tracks, one from the beach about 4.3 km north of Eurong which is 2.4 km long and the other is a shorter one f...
Encounter Lakes Marathon Swim

For some time now I've been planning to feature videos speaking to Marathon Swimming after all the name of this channel does have 'Endurance Swimmer' in it. I've decided the best way to do this is to take part in a series of challenges where I attempt to complete an official marathon swimming distance in as many different bodies of water as possible. Since 2008 when the Olympic Games first feat...
St Kilda Mangrove Trail

The St Kilda Mangrove Trail is a well known boardwalk built on the coast of this seaside suburb in South Australia (not to be confused with the suburb in Victoria with the same name). A little bit. I think it's good to respect the environment of where you are diving and knowing that it can bite you if one is too complacent. To quote a movie that I remember watching, "fear is good, it teaches limits." That being said, with proper training and attention to risk management most cave divers actually find it relaxing most of the time and I suspect you will too when you are trained and used to the environment.

    I want to see this demonstrations with thick dry gloves with under gloves on. Some knots are almost impossible.

    • @EnduranceSwimmer
      @EnduranceSwimmer 3 роки тому

      There are actually very few cave divers I know in Australia who dive with thick gloves that cover the fingers. In Mount Gambier it gets down to about 10 degrees centagrade and I still dive with gloves that have the fingers cut off for greater dexterity. I find that for dives up to about 2 hours it's fine. Yes you do loose a bit of dexterity by the end but you are pretty much ready to come out by then. Some of our members do occasionally do longer decompression dives in these sites or dive in places like New Zealand and there is a line in the sand where you're probably going to need thicker gloves or even dry ones. I've never used dry gloves but my take on this is simply to try and find the ones that work best and try and find the tie offs that are easiest to do with these kinds of gloves on. If they are so bulky that you can't do any tie offs with them then you can probably find a better option. This question is best directed towards some of our divers who dive in The Pearce Researgence in New Zealand.

    • @EnduranceSwimmer
      @EnduranceSwimmer 3 роки тому

      I can't be sure this is universal but I can give you some idea of what we do in Australia. Generally we use 3 types of markers that fall into 2 catagories, arrows and personal markers (which can be cookies and/or pegs). If we are just reeling in on a primary reel we know that the end of the line is outside the exit so most of us don't use markers at all unless we tie off to a fixed line (you can but it doesn't really serve a purpose). The moment you tie off onto a fixed line or if you run out of line and need to run a second reel then the game changes and we start using markers. You place a cookie or peg which has something like initials on it (and preferably something that you can identify with touch alone by doing something with it unique (a series of notches for example). You place it on the line you have jumped from (ie the exit side of the junction). There may be arrows on fixed lines or you may put them on a line you're fixing. Arrows (if used because they aren't always) should point in the direction of the exit. It does pay to be familiar with the site. If the site is on private property and only qualified cave divers have access you can probably be more confident as to the quality of the fixed lines and that random people haven't gone in and changed anything. Never take something for granted. If it is a site with fixed lines then you're probably going to have to take in a series of jump reels to move between the fixed lines. Best to check with the local cave diving community wherever you dive though in the event that they do something different. It goes without saying that they can literally be life lines so you want to be confident what the system is there bearing in mind that if you're deep you also may have a certain level of narcosis to contend with so it's good to be so familiar with the system that it's second nature. Gradually extending your penetrations in proportion to your experience and/or training and perhaps diving with someone familiar with the site are good practices.

      Thank you so much for the kind words. When I made it was because I struggled to find many videos on this subject when I went through my training so I basically made the video I was looking for at the time. As an aside we (me and my partner) have actually been uploading to a different channel for the last year called 'Oz in Pictures' which we started because there is usually strength in collaboration. Feel free to check it out and subscribe if you like what we are doing now. I'll be uploading this one there too in due course (albeit with a different intro because there are a few anecdotes associated with some of the things that came out of making this video). Most of our older content is getting a second life on our new channel. I've been focusing on some different activities recently (most notably sailing) and haven't had the opportunity to cave dive for a while however I would love to again and I had always intended to do further instructional videos.

      I'm on the same situation, can't find anymore a mask that I really love cause they stopped making it years ago. It's the Aqualung Falco, basically a tempered glass version of the Sphera, it has an amazing 180° horizontal field of view. I used to have one for many years but it was stolen when I was travelling :( there's also an identical mask, the Scubapro Freedom, but it's also discontinued so I can't find it either I've been using the Cressi Superocchio, and it's a great quality and tough affordable mask

      Skunkiboi This is one of the reasons most cave divers I know don't wear full gloves. I cut the fingers of mine and it's still adequate in quite cold water. Some don't wear them at all. You can still do a lot of wraps with gloves on, you just need to practice to see which are require less dexterity.

      Just a coincidence I'm afraid guys. Not sure who the person you make reference to is (I'm assuming it's a singer or musician). I made this video a few years ago to coincide with Halloween. It was effectively a bit of a joke that came about from a moment when my partner and I walked past a novelty shop and saw a skull mask on display and I turned to her and said "You know what would be a fun video to make?". The thumbnail was made on Adobe Premier Elements 12. It's one of the fonts available in what is a limited selection. I used fonts that contrast well with the background and this one seemed to work well. You'll note there are some I've used a number of times for other videos albeit sometimes in slightly different colours and it's just because they contrast well and fit in with what's in the photo to make clear thumbnails. Nothing more in it than that I'm afraid. I'm sure I'll do some more novelty videos in the future. Hope you enjoyed it😊.

    Is that safe to snorkle there? Im afraid of sharks and jellyfish

    • @EnduranceSwimmer
      @EnduranceSwimmer 6 років тому

      Jonathan Bayu S Yes it's reasonably safe. One has to do it in the right conditions like anywhere else so good judgement always needs to be used. The reef generally offers some protection. If waves are crashing over it and nobody is in the water then it's probably a bad idea but when it's calm it's quite nice. Entry is easy by the steps at the end of the jetty and there are plenty of fish (the local school aquatics program feed them I think so they are always there). As far as sharks and jellyfish go. As its the ocean it's always possible but the only shark I've ever actually seen there myself is a Port Jackson Shark (harmless). I suspect the occasional bronze whaler probably gets seen. I haven't heard reports inside the reef of Pointers but it's the ocean so it's possible. I've seen the occasional jellyfish but nothing particularly dangerous and not normally in great numbers. I've done 2 open water swimming races there too and not swum into any (whereas in Westlakes going round the island during summer you bump into stacks of them - not pleasant but harmless). In good conditions it's one of the safer places to snorkel. I'd be more concerned about people jumping off the end of the jetty without looking.

      Wade Smith You should be able to get them from most dive shops. Just ask for a line cutter that overhead environment divers use. When I'm in a cave I carry two but no knives as there aren't too many purposes that I can think of for knives in caves. However in the ocean I carry a line cutter and a knife. This link shows one of similar design to mine although I'm not sure if it's the same manufacturer. ua-cam.com/video/Ud-QrcGiOJI/v-deo.html

    Hardly any fish. Looks cold and bleak. And what's with the breaststroke kick with fins?

      NOTABOOS the kick comes from all the cave diving I do. It's an anti-silting technique that is less likely to disturb the bottom. After you do it as much as I have you find it's useful for other activities other than cave diving and it's surprisingly comfortable to use.
